Smart blower keeps cabinets cool

NMB Minebea added an intelligent 220mm unit to its comprehensive range of radial blowers, which includes devices from 190 to 280mm diameter.
NMB Minebea added an intelligent 220mm unit to its comprehensive range of radial blowers, which includes devices from 190 to 280mm diameter. The new blower is ideal for heat exchanger systems and cabinet cooling. All sizes of blowers are available with standard 24 and 48V DC ratings, all driven by the same generic motor design with a capability to operate from a wide voltage range.

The 220R071 delivers up to 1000m3/h in free air from a compact package just 71mm deep.

The NMB blower range features a unique brushless DC motor that mechanically protects the drive electronics, eradicating the need to encapsulate PCBs, typically situated close to motor windings and subject to moisture and dust ingress with other manufacturers products.

This innovative NMB feature offers resistance to adverse environmental conditions and above all, it allows use of the same part for both internal and external sections of the cooling circuit.

This not only simplifies logistics, but also offers a price reduction, as no encapsulating is necessary.

The NMB product features a microprocessor-based drive that allows rapid prototyping of blowers for individual customer applications, ensuring that the customers specified speed demand profile is matched to the application.

This feature also permits the use of closed loop speed control.

NMB blowers also include options for alarm and fan fail signals, together with standard speed control by PWM or voltage control.

Motor protection features include overload, locked rotor and low-speed sensing.

Lubricated bearings keep fan noise down

T and T's high-value compact axial fan range is now available with higher flow rates and pressures.
T and T's high value compact axial fan range is now available with higher flow rates and pressures. The T and T product range is available from European Thermodynamics with frame sizes between 25 x 25 x 10mm and 120 x 120 x 38mm. High-pressure fans are available in most frame sizes, and T and T has a strong development programme to add further technology to their product introductions.

All products have UL, CUL, CE and TUV approvals.

Operating voltages from 5 to 48V DC are available with optional speed sensors and control lines.

T and T offers a variety of bearing systems, including sleeve, one-ball/one-sleeve, two ball, and the ALS bearing system.

The patented ALS system (advanced long-life sleeve bearing), provides life expectancy superior to one-ball/one-sleeve systems, and is cost competitive with reduced noise.

The system uses a synthetic lubricant, and has a novel lubricant recycling system for improved life performance.

Thanks to the recycling system more lubricant can be used, thus assisting in noise reduction over the normal sleeve bearing system.

Balance is another important factor in the reliability of a fan, and so T and T fans also feature ABS (automatic balance system), which is a specially designed mechanism used to control the balance of the blades.

Powerful DC fan to cool complete enclosures

According to JMC Products, a single 9232-12V fan can be input into a chassis to successfully extract air from an entire system.
According to JMC Products, a single 9232-12V fan can be input into a chassis to successfully extract air from an entire system. The 9232-12V has been effectively applied with a passive heatsink and baffling system in order to direct air through the heatsink and out of a dual or single processor workstation. In addition, the fan is ideally used to cool power supplies in a similar method.

The 9232-12V can be thermally controlled to deliver an exceptionally low noise level of 20dBA at low speed.

Consuming very little power, the high-speed fan cools a system with an impressive 82ft3/min, running at 4000rev/min.

"The addition of the 92 x 32mm to our DC fan line is key to our continued success in developing market-driven products", states John Murphy, President of JMC Products.

"The 92 x 32mm was designed to be a low-cost, low-power fan that will provide our customers with robust system cooling".

The 9232-12V is a dual ball bearing fan offering auto restart, tacho output, or locked rotor output with an L10 life data projected to be 70kh.

The maximum operating impedance is 0.31in H2O and the size of the 9232-12V model is 92 x 92 x 32mm.

The 9232-12V DC fan is available now to OEM and distribution customers in low, medium and high speeds.

JMC's 9232-12V fan ranges in price from $5 to $6 depending on fan features, speed, and quantities ordered.

Marathon fan still running after 20 years

Papst has a fan that has been on continuous test for over 20 years.
Papst has demonstrated a fan that has been on continuous test for over 20 years. Deep in Germany's Black Forest region at Papst's worldwide HQ the aptly titled Marathon fan has been running continuously for a massive 175kh. The fans, Papst types 6148 (48V DC) and 7650 (220V AC) have been in operation throughout the period without any problems.

They have been running continuously at 40C under a once a month stop/start cycle.

Over that time the shafts have made over 30 billion revolutions, and the outer edges of the fan blades, based on 2870rev/min, have travelled over 13 million kilometers - equivalent to 30 flights to the moon.

While the figures themselves are quite impressive, the achievement is even more important due to the fact that no maintenance was ever carried out on the fans.

This genuine field test shows that simulation programs implemented 20 years ago, coupled with the materials used, fully met the company's own quality requirements.

This has led to increased added-value for the customer by way of improved reliability and longer service life.

Indeed the trial adds weight to statements by Papst concerning products' service life, proving that such claims are not just sales talk, but have a solid engineering basis.

Modern electronics rely heavily on forced air cooling and not surprisingly fan manufacturers claim their products are highly reliability for today's increasingly' demanding applications.

Given these latest test results, few are better placed than Papst to demonstrate this.

By definition a cooling fan is designed to remove excessive heat.

Fan failure occurs due to the effects of high temperatures degrading the bearing lubricant over time combined with the mechanical stress of continuous operation in hostile thermal environments.

Generally speaking DC fans will last longer than AC fans and typically operate from -20 to +70C with life expectancies of between 35 and 80kh, depending on the model and operating conditions.

Papst's "Marathon fan" is a demonstrable testament to the company's experience and reputation for high quality cooling fans.

Fan provides wide range of design options

The Etri 380 is available with five different speed versions and therefore offers a wide range of performance options and a high degree of design flexibility.
The Etri 380, a brushless DC fan available in the UK exclusively from Aerco, is available with five different speed versions and therefore offers a wide range of performance options and a high degree of design flexibility. Built in the 40 x 40 x 20mm frame size, the 380 series is available in 5, 12 and 24VDC with speed options of 5000, 6300, 7600, 8200 and 9000rev/min. This provides airflow ranging from a maximum of 5.5ft3/min in the DL versions to a maximum of 10.12ft3/min in the DX versions.

Operating noise levels range from 22dB(A), a figure that is below ambient office noise levels.

Available with speed sensor and open collector alarm facilities and a life cycle of over 80kh at 40C, the 380 series with its wide range of performance options will find applications in many different areas and will be ideal for fitting into 1U rack fan trays.
