A/D convertor claims biggest bandwidth

A 14bit 155Msample/s analogue-to-digital convertor claims an industry-leading full-power bandwidth of 1.1GHz.
National Semiconductor has introduced a 14bit 155Msample/s analogue-to-digital convertor (ADC) that offers an industry-leading full-power bandwidth of 1.1GHz. The ADC14155 allows digitisation of very high frequency signals, enabling high intermediate-frequency (IF) architectures in wireless communication applications. The ADC14155's high bandwidth performance allows it to digitise the first IF, eliminating the need for the second IF stage.

This helps reduce component count and system power consumption, while also improving system reliability.

The ADC14155 is well-suited for all applications where high-bandwidth ADCs with excellent dynamic performance are required, such as 3G wireless basestations and test equipment.

'National is focused on providing our customers with distinct performance benefits when using our convertors', said Antonio Visconti, Product Line Director of National Semiconductor's Data Conversion Division.

'For example, the ADC14155's 1.1GHz full-power bandwidth is 72% higher than the closest competitor in the 14bit space and that advantage enables system designers to develop breakthrough architectures for wireless communication applications'.

In coming months, National plans to expand its high-speed 14bit portfolio with additional low-power, high-performance ADCs in multiple speed grades and configurations that address the requirements of a broad range of applications.

The ADC14155 is the first in a new family of high-speed 14bit ADCs that offers the industry's highest performance with low power consumption, as well as parallel CMOS, parallel low-voltage differential signalling (LVDS) and serial LVDS output options.

National will expand this 14bit family of ADCs to include products ranging from 80 to 155Msample/s, with one- and two-channel versions, and CMOS and LVDS outputs.

The ADC14155 also will be available with double datarate, parallel LVDS outputs.

These ADCs will be introduced throughout the summer and fall of this year.

The ADC14155 provides a dynamic performance of 85dB spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) and a 72dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at an input frequency of 70MHz, which is commonly used in communications receivers.

The low-jitter front end on the ADC14155 enables the industry's best performance of 72dB SFDR and 68dB SNR at an input frequency as high as 420MHz.

The ADC14155 operates on a 3.3V supply while consuming 980mW (typical), with a power-down feature to reduce power consumption to 5mW.

A separate +1.8V supply for the digital interface allows low-power operation with reduced noise.

The ADC14155 is available in a 48-pin LLP package.
