Eighteen-year-old rising star David Peters has beaten off competition from 15 other electronics students to be named Apprentice of the Year by Northumberland College. Employed by electronic components manufacturer, TT Electronics Welwyn Components, Peters was singled out for the award because of his exceptional academic results, continuous hard work and outstanding commitment to the course. Peters joined TT Welwyn aged 16 and has recently completed his second year of the four-year apprenticeship.

For the past two years he has combined working within TT Welwyn's Microelectronics Division as a Trainee Process Improvement Engineer with studying one day per week at the Ashington campus of Northumberland College.

Peters was awarded with a trophy and high street vouchers in recognition of his achievement, but claims that his greatest moment will come when he finally qualifies: 'I'm part of a fantastic small team at Welwyn, who have been very supportive throughout the first two years of my course'.

'My aim now is to keep up the standard of my work, become a good engineer and put some of the theory in to practice'.

The role of Process Improvement Engineer is an important one to Welwyn, as the company is constantly looking for new innovative ways to improve its products and processes in to maintain its position as market leader in an increasingly global market.

Peters' success is the third in as many months for TT Welwyn, which is building a reputation for producing high achieving apprentices.
