Supply sets standard for harmonics tests
Low-distortion AC power supply provides pure source of mains power for the measurement of current waveform harmonics as required for EMC compliance under EN61000-3-2.
TTi (Thurlby Thandar Instruments) has re-engineered its AC1000 low-distortion EN61000-3-2 compliant power source. The new unit, designated AC1000A, has been redesigned to improve both performance and ergonomics. The AC1000A is a 1kW low-distortion AC power supply designed to provide a pure source of mains power for the measurement of current waveform harmonics as required for EMC compliance under EN61000-3-2.
Compliance quality measurements under the standard require the source supply to provide a pure voltage waveform to the equipment under test.
The AC1000A is specifically designed for this purpose.
Many environments may have mains waveforms which diverge significantly from a pure sinusoid as a result of nonlinear loading, either within the environment or outside.
Most common of these distortions is the 'flat topped' waveform that results from high currents being taken at the voltage peaks.
The AC1000A is also very useful for the stress testing of power supplies in electronic equipment.
The use of a harmonically pure, distortion-free device is essential to fully stress and evaluate the power supply under test.
The power source is rated up to 1000VA for 230V operation.
It has a continuous current rating of 4.4A and a peak current rating of 10A.
In contrast to products which use a passive filtering approach, it uses an innovative technique which actively corrects the AC supply to produce a harmonically pure output.
The unit under test is connected via a standard 13A socket mounted on the front panel of the instrument.
Weighing only 5kg and measuring 307 x 105 x 225mm, the unit has a compact footprint which matches that of TTi's own power and harmonic analyser, the HA1600A.
